Howard Pyle (1853 - 1911) was an American illustrator, author, and teacher who produced many classic illustrated volumes, including fables, fairy tales and adventure stories.
He was particularly fond of the Middle Ages and wrote and illustrated
several works set in medieval Europe and England. Among these are Otto of the Silver Hand (1888), The Story of King Arthur and his Knights (1903) and The Story of the Champions of the Round Table (1905). The
wood-engraved illustrations for these works clearly reference
Pre-Raphaelite illustrations of the 1860s from which Pyle would have had
ample exposure, both through prints and illustrations, as well as
first-hand in the Wilmington collection of his contemporary, Samuel BancrofT. (Norman Rockwell Museum)
