Warwick Goble, Illustrations for Green Willow by Grace James, part 2

Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was raised in London and attended the Westminster School of Art. The earliest books that Goble illustrated, were The Oracle of Baal  and H.G. Wells‘ famous War of Worlds in 1898. I don’t feel very enthusiastic for the illustrations of his early period. Nevertheless, it is always interesting to follow the development of an artist. His mastership he attained  in fantasy art in oriental style.
By 1900 the publishers were faced with a growing demand for color-plate books. It was the great golden time for illustrators like W. Heath Robinson, Edmund Dulac, Arthur Rackham etc. Concerning this time Goble is often overlooked .Goble was well-versed in watercolor techniques and very influenced by the same Japanese technique. Therefore,  Goble was perfectly suited for producing the illustrations for Green Willow and other Japanese Fairy Tales by Grace James. The book  appeared in 1910 and contained 40 color plates. It’s a pity that in its second edition the number of plates was reduced to 16.

Wells berümter SF Roman War of the Worlds in 1898. Allerdings hält sich die Begeisterung für seine Illustrationen dieser Frühzeit in Grenzen. Seine Meisterschaft sollte Goble erst mit seinen Bildern im orientalisch-asiatischen Stil erreichen.
Um die Zeit von 1900 nämlich sahen sich die Verleger einem wachsenden Verlangen der Käufer nach farbigen Buchillustrationen gegenüber. Es ist dies auch die golden Blütezeit der Buchillustration, die Künstler wie W. Heath Robinson, Edmund Dulac, Arthur Rackham etc. hervorbrachte. Zu ihnen gehört sicher auch Warwick Goble, obschon er oft übersehen wird. Goble war sehr versiert in der Technik der Wasserfarben und sein Stil ist von der japanischen Maltechnik beeinflusst. Somit war Goble der geeignete Künstler, um die Bilder zu Green Willow and other Japanese Fairy Tales von Grace James zu malen. Das Buch erschien 1910 und enthielt 40 Farbtafeln. Leider wurde in der zweiten Auflage die Anzahl der Bilder auf 16 reduziert. (E.W.)
