Henry Patrick Raleigh: Illustrator of the High Society

He dropped out of school when he was 12, to help support his family. First a newspaper boy, later then he got a job with coffee-importing firm. He started to sketch and impressed his boss Colonel Clarence Bickford who offered to pay Raleigh’s tuition to attend the renowned San Francisco art school, the Hopkins Academy.
By the time he was 25 he was one of the highest paid newspaper artist in America. For almost thirty years, most issue of the Saturday Evening Post featured the drawings of Henry Raleigh.  In all he was called upon to illustrate over five hundred Post stories for such revered authors as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Agatha Christie, Stephen Vincent Benet, William Faulkner, Sinclair Lewis, and Somerset Maugham.
By the time that he was forty three he had published over 20,000 illustrations. At his peak he was the highest paid illustrator in America and perhaps the world. Briefly, he was the illustrator of the glamorous high society, the artist of the Great Gatsby Era 1910-1940.
1939 Saturday Evening Post took advantage of the new printing equipment that could print color photographs. The golden times for the magazine illustrators were over. Henry Raleigh, out of work, could no longer support his rich lifestyle. By jumping from the window of his Manhattan hotel he took his own life.

Mit zwölf Jahren verliess er die Schule, um die Familie zu unterstützen. Er schlug sich zuerst als Zeitungsjunge durch, später erhielt er einen Job bei einer Firma, die Kaffee importierte. Seine Skizzen, die er zwischendurch machte, imponierten seinem Chef Colonel Clarence Bickford, der Raleigh offerierte, seinen Unterricht an der bekannten San Francisco art school, the Hopkins Academy, zu bezahlen. Mit 25 Jahren war er einer der höchst bezahlten Newspaper Künstler in Amerika. Fast dreissig Jahre lang erschienen in der Saturday Evening Post Zeichnungen von Henry Raleigh. Für so illustre Autoren wie F. Scott Fitzgerald, Agatha Christie, Stephen Vincent Benet, William Faulkner, Sinclair Lewis, and Somerset Maugham schuf  Raleigh Illustrationen in den Saturday Evening Post Ausgaben. Mit 40 Jahren belief sich die Anzahl seiner Illustrationen auf über 20'000. Auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Laufbahn war er der bestbezahlte Illustrator in Amerika. In kurzen Worten, er war der Illustrator der glamurösen High Society, der Künstler der Grossen Gatsby Aera von 1910 bis 1940.
1939 installierte die Saturday Evening Post ein neues Druckverfahren, das erlaubte farbige Fotographien zu drucken. Damit waren die goldenen Zeiten für die Illustratoren von Magazinen vorüber.  Henry Raleigh wurde arbeitslos und konnte seinen extravaganten Lebensstil nicht mehr halten. Er nahm sich das Leben, indem er von seinem Manhatten Hotel aus dem Fenster sprang.
