The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells illustrated by Warwick Goble

Warwick Goble illustrated H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds in 1898. It seems surprising to find the name of Warwick Goble, the illustrator of fairy books, connected to this famous SF novel. It was the third book which he illustrated. He was not well known as an artist at this time. The dark side of this SF novel shows up in his pictures, therefore, they are still worth showing.

Es mag  überraschend scheinen, seinen Namen in Zusammenhang mit diesem berühmten SF Roman zu finden, da er doch vor allem durch seine farbigen Märchenillustrationen bekannt wurde. Aber zu jener Zeit, als er Wells Buch als sein drittes illustrierte, war er unbekannt und hatte seine Meisterschaft noch nicht gefunden. Immerhin findet die düstere Stimmung der Geschichte ihren Ausdruck in seinen Bildern. Wir mögen heute über die etwas simple Konstruktion der Raumschiffe schmunzeln, aber vergessen wir nicht: 1898 war noch kein Flugzeug am Himmel zu sehen.
