Gustave Doré - *The Rime of the Ancient Mariner* (part1)

The poem’s first version of "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge was published in Lyrical Ballads 1798. Gustave Doré’s crowded, romantic illustrations for the Acient Mariner were first published in 1875 by the Doré Gallery in London. Although Doré has been out of fashion for many decades, the romantic realism of his illustrations reinforce the mood ot the text, as a good melody for a song should reinforce the mood of the lyrics.
Thomas Wolfe wrote in a letter 1932: But I do not think "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" was for Coleridge an escape from reality: I think it was reality, I think he was on the ship and made the voyage and felt he knew it all.
