A example how I work when I have to creat a figure in the front

for a commercial commission. 

(It was a streetscene for a architecture prospect... )

Mr and Mrs Gardener, two sketches for playing cards.
It often happens that such "waste" I like more than
the finished result. But what others want and what I want are
always two different things! Of course meaning the commercial commissions...

Gorilla Face

In the past I designed on the smallest space.
And today I notice that an A3 size is not enough big to 

drawing a gorilla. Luckily there exists photocopier and tracing paper
to save a reduction, even if it is complicated a little bit.

Früher fokusierte ich alles auf einem A5 Format, selbst die

kleinsten Details. Und heute muss ich feststellen

dass ein A3 Format nicht gross genug ist um einen

ganzen Gorilla darauf unter zu bringen.

Gut hat man die Photokopierer erfunden um solch

ausgeartete Missgeschicke zu verkleinern und mittels

Pauspapier einen neuen Anfang starten zu können.

Vielleicht liegt es aber auch daran dass Gorillas

ein starkes Auftreten haben?

A roman senator in the train

A meeting in the train. A roman senator?? 

A striking head ! I noticed  me the details;

the pressed eye and mouth, the vertical line of the oral fold, the sharp ear,
the corner of the nose. 

With pleasure I would have sketching him immediately 

or photos with my Lumix, however, the risk he could pull out a 

Roman short sword was too big to me. Ave Cesar!

At home I draw immediately my
Impressions from memory. Not the imitation of the reality

was important: The caracteristic things that makes the

realtiy was important.

Eine Begegnung im Zug. Es wäre zu gewagt gewesen ihn

direkt zu skizzieren oder gar zu fotographieren. Ein

römischer Senator vielleicht oder gar Julius Cesar?

Ein Charakterkopf mediterraner Herkunft sicherlich.

Zuhause nahm ich schnell die leere Rückseite des abgerissenen

Abfallkalenderblattes und notierte mir das was ich

durch mein Beobachten bewahren konnte. Nicht die

photorealistische Wiedergabe der Realität war mir wichtig sondern

das was die Realität ausmacht!

Troll and Lizzard, sketch and predrawing

I have draw this Troll for a other greater work that
shows a troll flying with a owl.
Drawn on the unprinted back of the waste calendar from last Year!

Immer wenn ich mir etwas erarbeiten will fallen Zeichnungen
als "Nebenprodukt" an. So wie dieser Troll, den ich eigentlich
für eine grössere Arbeit gestaltet habe. Er soll, auf einer Eule
sitzend, durch den nächtlichen Wald fliegen.
Das fortgeschrittene Stadium der Vorzeichnung hat nun auch
eine kleine Eidechse nach sich gezogen. Sie gibt dem Bild-
chen einen kleinen Sinn und steht im Bezug zur Blick-
richtung des Trolls.
Solche Darstellungen hatte es ja schon im "fin de siecle" gegeben,
wo symbolisch Märchenfiguren als Mittler für Harmonie mit der 
Natur  eingesetzt wurden. Ich erinnere hier nur an John Bauer und
Louis Moe. Und Arnold Böcklin natürlich!

Gorilla

This is the quick sketch of a gorilla. Im on the
search of a idea/composition for a illustration
(maybe on scraperboard...) with a gorilla that
atacks a blonde (wath else?) woman in the
jungle. The sketch is more a expressive thing
than a finish composition. The photos helps
me to release my imaginations and the
anatomical corectnes has in the moment not
the first priority...

The folds of a cloth

The folds of a cloth are like mountains and dales...
From Leonardo Davinci whe know some very
beautiful studies in the same technique and nearly
each "old master" has also used it.
Grey-blue paper, pencil and white greasy pencil.

Cloud study

Yesterday I was sitting in the train loking outside the window how the
sky play cracy. It was one of this tipical wintersky and the lights and
contrasts changing fast. By the horizont I have see a fascinating
cumulus cloud laying on a very soft white background cloud. Sometimes
I wish I have a little good digicam on me like yesterday. Buth wath
doing if you dont have it in a moment like this? Work from the good
old "memory"!! - pencil and color pencil on paper A4.
This color sketch is a help for the future and save the importand
impressions of this clouds that I have see.
Later, when I decide to use it for a background
in a painting, I search photo references that helps me to make the
details like in reality. This simple sketch is like a bridge.
