Jimpy by Hugh McClelland

 

HUGH MCCLELLAND, who was born in South Africa in 1912, is the man who brings to the

SUPER COMIC readers the escapades of Jimpy. He lived in South Africa until 1924, when he went to England to commence a career as a cartoonist. Not long after his arrival he began to gather information about Jimpy, and although he served with the Royal Air Force during the war he managed to draw some of Jimpy's adventures. 
Jimpy was a short-lived British fantasy strip for children that ran in the Daily Mirror from 1946 and folded in 1952. Maurice Horn (World Encyclopedia of Comics) believes it may have been a victim of opinion polls which consistently gave Jimpy a low rating but failed to ask children, its target audience.

For those who do not know Jimpy's life story, Mr McClelland says Jimpy is a little boy who failed to pass his examinations in magic at the Royal College of Magic. Although Jimpy realised that he was not a fully qualified magician and he was not at all reliable with his magic, he decided to go into the world and seek his fortune as a magician.


 Es ist eigenartig, dass der Comic-Strip Jimpy seinen Weg in die schweizerischen Juniorheftchen fand, die in meiner Kindheit in Lebensmittelgeschäften und in Drogerien gratis zum Mitnehmen auflagen. In einer Zeit, in der Lehrer und andere pädagogische Erzieher heftig gegen Comics und andere Schundliteratur wetterten. Unberührt davon, sammelte ich die Juniorheftchen ausschliesslich wegen der Jimpy Geschichten.
Jimpy erschien zuerst beim Daily Mirror von 1946 -1952.

Der Zauberlehrling Jimpy ist beim Examen durchgefallen, was ihn aber nicht abhält, eine Laufbahn als Zauberer einzuschlagen. Viele seiner Zaubereien schlagen dabei fehl.

1982 bis 1986 erschienen im Globi-Verlag Zürich drei Jimpy-Bände, deren graphische Ausstattung  Peter Heinzer entwarf.
