Věnceslav Černý: Illustrationen zu Karl Mays Auf fremden Pfaden


Die erste tschechische Ausgabe mit den Illustrationen von Věnceslav Černý zu Karl Mays Auf fremden Pfaden erschien im Verlag Alois Hynek, Prag im Jahre 1910.

 Der junge Neele hatte den Bären bis auf zwei Schritte zu sich herankommem lassen.

 Da sah ich, dass der Scheik einen Stein vom Boden aufhob.


 Zu unserem Erstaunen sahen wir, dass das Kind ganz mutterseelenallein im Sande lag.

 Ich machte dem Perser auch die Arme frei und zog ihn nach dem Ufer.

 Ich schoss auf sein Pferd.


Gott lässt sich nicht spotten
 
 Mein hieb traf Old Cursing-Dry so auf den Arm, dass er die Waffe fallen liess.


 Der Posten hatte zweimal auf sie geschossen.


Ein Blizzard
 
Unter den Trümmern der eingestürzten Schuppenhälfte arbeitete sich eine Gestalt hervor.

"The Great Sea-Horse" by Isabel Anderson, illustrated by John Elliott, 2nd part






Young Neptune
He was very brave and strong ... and battled with the gteat octopus.



Betty and the Sea Fairy
Next she hitched the mouse to  a seashell for a carriage.


Whistling Bob and his Wicked Cat
"Cat", cried the whitch, stamping her feet, "you too my keep your name and continue to mew."




The Bold Sea Dwarfs
I saw something on the bowsprit that looked like a grinning dwarf.


I was sitting on a cockle-shell, gliding over the surface of the water.





Justice  Whisker's Trial
 He took his seat on a large tomato, which served as a cushion to the throne.







Old Man of the Sea's Ransom
First they stuffed his noisy trumpets.


So it came about that a new and beautiful island reache the light. 


 

  The Fairy Admiral
The little ship grounded among the long grasses....of the Island of the Flower Fairies

Just then the nixie of the fountain showed her beutiful head.
The laughing wind fairies were filling their cheeks and blowing the humming-bird stright out to the open ocean.

"The Great Sea-Horse" by Isabel Anderson, illustrated by John Elliott, 1st part



John Elliott (April 22, 1858 – May 26, 1925) was an artist, illustrator, and muralist. Born in Lincolnshire, England, he studied in Paris at the Académie Julian under Carolus-Duran. In 1878, he went to Rome to study with José Villegas Cordero and there met his future wife, Maud Howe, Pulitzer-prize-winning American writer and the daughter of Julia Ward Howe, the author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Elliott is known for his epic Symbolist murals including working alongside his friend and colleague John Singer Sargent to provide murals for the Boston Public library. As well as creating a mural in the National Museum.( now the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.)

 She lived in a beautiful air-castle built of children's rainbow-colored soap bubbles.



The Great Sea Horse
 He would not have minded having one pretty mermaid for his mistress, to ride on his back and to pet him.

He loved to roll in the yellow sand by the light of the moon.
 

 He kicked the wheel and broke it into flinders.

The Ocean Giant

Old Neptune drove up  in his chariot, which was drawn by prancing white horses.

The moon boy  slipped down a silver ray into a garden full of flowers.

 


The Dance of the Fire Fairies
 The good fire fairies have been making pictures for me on the wall.




 Merry Jerry's Strange Visit 
"S-s-h! Give me your hand. A devilfish lurks here!*


 They caught a big dogfish and Jerry got astride on him.
