William Rainey R.I.: Illustrations for adventure books

William Rainey R.I. (1852-1936) was a British artist and illustrator who studied at the Royal College of Art and at the Royal Academy. He is known for his landscape and figure paintings and exhibited many paintings at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, and the Glasgow Institute of Fine Art. He lived in London before moving to Chichester, then Emsworth and finally Eastbourne on the South Coast. His illustrations appeared in the major publications of the time such as the London Illustrated News. He also illustrated many books including  Charles Dickens  David Copperfield. His watercolours and original illustrations can be seen in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (two watercolours) and at the National Maritime Museum, London (Just Landed and Aliens arriving at Irongate Stairs).
