Queen Summer or, The tourney of the lily & the rose by Walter Crane

Walter Crane (* 15. August 1845 in Liverpool; † 14. März 1915 in Horsham, West Sussex) war ein englischer Maler und Illustrator und einer der führenden Vertreter des Arts and Crafts Movement.

Walter Crane

The drawings of Queens Summer (Cassell and Co., London, 1891) have much in common with other works by Crane which feature anthropomorhic flowers and garden fairies, subjects which were very much in vogue during the Victorian era.
Here Crane tells the story of beautiful damsels and brave knights, who personify the essence of spirits of the garden flowers. The charm of these simple yet elegant drawings, reminiscent of medieval illuminated manuscripts, transcends the fairly cliched story.
