William Hatherell (1855 - 1928) was a Victorian era illustrator who worked for magazines such as The Graphic, Harpers, Scribner's and the Century
Gordon Frederick Browne  (15 April 1858 – 27 May 1932) was an English artist and a prolific illustrator of children's books in the late 19th century and early 20th century. He was a meticulous craftsman and went to a great deal of effort to ensure that his illustrations were accurate. He illustrated six or seven books a year in addition to a huge volume of magazine illustration.

(I don't know why the "e" of Browne was not printed on this title page of the book.)

DER STRAND VON FALESA, Die Erzählung eines Südseehändlers

Frontispiece
Uma showed the Best Bearing for a Bride Conceivable.

 The Ban (Der Bann)

What does fussy-ocky mean ? I asked of Uma.

The Missionary (Der Missonar)

Have you had enough? cried I.

I kept posting him up on master case and the beach of Falesà.

I'm no missionary, nor missonary lover.

"Will you know what was in his heart?" cries he.

Devil-Work (Teufelswerk)

Looking round the corner, I saw a shining face.

We stuck just the way we were.

Night in the Bush (Nacht im Busch)

The winchester cracked again, and down she went.

I had him by the ankle.

The Bottle Imp (Der Flaschenteufel)

"This is the bottle", said the man.

The Imp looked out of the bottle.

I thought I knew everyone in the country.

Keawe of the bright house is  out spirits.

The young man fell upon his knees. "For God's sake buy it!" he cried.

There, under the bananas, lay Keawe, his mouth in the dust, and as he lay he moaned.

There was Kokua on the floor, the lamp at her side; before her was a milk-white bottle, with a round belly and a long neck.

So off he went down the avenue toward town, and there goes the bottle out of the story.

THE ISLE OF VOICES (Die Insel der Stimmen)

While he was so thinking, there was his father-in-law behind him, look ing vexed.

The herbs caught strongly afire, and the flames beat upon Keola.

"Back!" cried Keala. "Back! The leaves are near done!"

There he was striding and dwindling, and he held the lamp hiogh over his head, and the waves broke white about him as he went.

In a wide shallow water, bright with ten thousand stars, and all about him was the ring ofvthe land, with its string of palm trees.

When the fires sprang up, he charged for them like a bull.

Came into the borders of the wood, and stood astonished.

And the missionary was very sharp on him for taking the second wife in the low island.
