AT THE BACK OF THE NORTH WIND by George MacDonald illustrated by Jessie Willcox Smith

Jessie Willcox Smith (September 6, 1863 – May 3, 1935) was one of the most prominent female illustrators in the United States during the Golden Age of American illustration.

Against this he laid his ear, and then he heard the voice quite distinctly..


"Now you lead me," he said, taking her hand, "and I'll take care of  you".


She took his hand, and giving him the broad part of the spiral stair to
walk on, led him down a good way.

"Are you ill, dear North Wind?" 

"Dear boy!" said his mother; "your father's the best man in the world." 


So Diamond sat down again and took the baby in his lap. 

The collar was almost the worst part of the business.
